Which animal do you prefer, cats or dogs? Nearly everyone has at some point been the subject of an inquiry. Our love for our animal companions undoubtedly says it all, but of the two, dogs may have won our hearts over more than cats. A recent survey, according to CBS News, revealed that pet owners are more likely to show their dogs affection than their cats. As Newsweek reveals, however, the study is more nuanced than a clear-cut victory of dogs over cats.

Why dogs are preferred as pets over cats

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen led the study, which was published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science. The researchers examined the opinions of pet owners in Denmark, the UK, and Australia who were between the ages of 18 and 89 in order to determine how they felt about their dogs and cats.

The study employed the renowned Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale (LAPS) to evaluate this love. In light of this, the study took into account answers to phrases like "I think my pet is my best friend." To evaluate their performance, the study examined the responses to these queries. They also took into account the owners' willingness to pay for life-saving procedures and whether or not they would obtain pet health insurance .These elements aided in their comprehension of the way pet owners tend to their four-legged friends. A remarkable 17,747 pet owners participated in the study, with a nearly equal distribution of dog and cat owners.

As a result, an astonishing finding surfaced: dog owners continuously scored higher on the LAPS scale. It was clear that dog owners who were also more likely to go above and beyond for life-saving actions also had higher insurance rates for their pets. It is possible to infer that the reason for dogs' increasing popularity is their devoted owners, who have a special emotional bond with them.

The study on pet owners was influenced by multiple factors.

But "it does not seem to be a universal phenomenon that people care much less about their cats than their dogs," the scientists write. The researchers actually considered the differences between dogs and cats in the UK to be "very modest."

It would be inaccurate to attribute their success just to the behavior of dogs. The true determinants of the care our four-legged friends receive, however, are the cultural norms surrounding them. This "cultural hypothesis" holds that the rivalry between the two animals is frequently inflated in the media and reflected in the respective pet owners' behavior. Even though many of our animal friends have friendly connections in real life, this portrayal in the media still happens .For instance, the human-feline bond seems to be stronger in Mexico and the US, where it is customary for cats to live indoors. Because they are housed in walls, these cats develop close relationships with their humans, which demands greater attention.

Conversely, in nations such as the United Kingdom and Denmark, the standard of care declines. Many cats in these areas love going on outdoor adventures and are forced to do so. It is also clear that the duration of time spent together and the level of dependency between the human and the animal are important factors in developing the pet-owner relationship.

Research limitations

Lastly, just a few European countries' pet cultures are included in the sample size. It completely disregards other non-European countries across the globe. The authors acknowledge the limitations of their own research in light of this. According to them, "owners' levels of caring for their dogs and cats can change as human lifestyles do and are not limited or otherwise defined solely by the nature of the animals."
